Processes utilizing anammox bacteria for N removal have become extremely popular toward energy-saving wastewater treatment - and for good reason. Anammox organisms do not require oxygen or organic carbon as they convert ammonium (NH4+) and nitrite (NO2-) directly to nitrogen gas (N2). For 3 years, we evaluated the performance of a laboratory-scale deammonification bioreactor (single-stage partial nitritation-anammox process), which treated the effluent from the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant struvite recovery process (Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, Madison, WI, USA).
