Based on the similarity (91-93%) of its 16S rRNA gene sequence to those of the type species of the currently recognised genera of acidophilic iron oxidising Actinobacteria (Acidimicrobium, Ferrimicrobium, Ferrithrix), strain Py-F3 has been assigned to the new genus Acidithrix representing it as type species.
