It grows thermophilically and anaerobically, and was first isolated from an anaerobic sewage digestor in Marburg, Germany (Fuchs et al., 1978). This sample was inoculated using a pure culture from the DSMZ (DSM 2133). It cultured on H2 (80%) and CO2 (20%) in MS media (Balch et al. 1979, modified Sarbu 2013) at 65C in serum bottles. The genomic DNA was then extracted and used for genome sequencing and assembly.
